Anesthesiology

Introduction

The Department of Anaesthesiology is one of the largest departments of our Institute. It is committed to providing advanced perioperative, pain, and critical care services to all. Over the last 12 years of establishment, it has gradually become a department of excellence in education, research, and clinical practice.

The department is one of the busiest departments running more than 20 modular OTs, 3 state of art ICUs and 14 bedded palliative ward. We also provide non-operating room anaesthesia in radiology, radiotherapy, psychiatry and endoscopy suites. We have a dedicated 24X 7 acute pain services team catering to patient’s perioperatively and in labour. We have a dedicated OT for chronic pain interventions like C arm or ultrasound guided block, Radio frequency ablations.

The Department of Anaesthesiology formed the backbone of all services involved in the treatment of sick COVID-19 patients as critical care management of all suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 patients was under the stewardship of the Department of Anesthesiology. All residents and faculty tirelessly and continually involved in the care of the sickest COVID patients, providing basic and advanced care during these testing times.

Apart from their outstanding clinical work, the faculties in the department have excelled in research by publishing and presenting papers. We can proudly claim that we have the highest number of publications in esteemed journals with high impact factor in our institute. Our faculties and residents have received many national and international accolades because of their contribution in research and clinical services.

Post Graduates students are enrolled 6th monthly in the department (total 20 PGs every year). We also run 2 years fellowship programs in Critical care, Pediatric Anaesthesia and Neuro Anesthesia (2 seats every year).

Our purpose is also to support the scientific community in form of quality research work, publications and presentations.

Postgraduate students enroll themselves for the postgraduate course (MD) which is of three years duration and includes a thesis. The department currently admits 20 students per year, selection for which is made twice a year i.e. in January and July. The selection is based on an INI CET Examination.

All postgraduate students are rotated in all surgical specialties, Intensive Care, Pre-Anesthesia clinics and Pain clinics. The Department has fixed guidelines for anaesthetic procedures to be undertaken and the curriculum planning for the junior residents. There are designated faculty academics in charge working under the guidance of HOD for this purpose. Thesis writing is mandatory for partial fulfilment for the final MD examination. Our teaching program consists of seminars, journal clubs, case discussions, tutorials and Guest lectures (4 days a week), All Junior and Senior Residents take part in the didactic teaching activities regularly under the faculty moderation which is encouraged to be as interactive as possible. This is in addition to the daily operating room or Intensive care unit-based teaching activities.

To ensure quality in clinical care, teaching and research aspects, new initiatives taken this year included starting the acute pain services, and non-operating room anaesthesia as described. We have actively been involved in teaching and training at the city, state, national and international levels. The department can proudly claim to have the maximum number of publications in scientific journals this year as compared to any other anaesthesia department in the whole of East India. Papers presented by the department has won awards even in an international forum.
